Allah Is Gentle With You But Are You Gentle With Yourself ?

Feeling low is normal. As students of the Qur’an, our mentality, our way of life, and our perspective are often different from those around us—even those closest to us. This emotional heaviness isn't a sign of failure; it is deeply human. Even our beloved Prophet ﷺ went through such phases.

If you are feeling overwhelmed today, remember: This awareness is a gift.

1. Acceptance: You Are Not Broken

The first step is to accept that your feelings are valid and firmly rooted in Islamic tradition.

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.” (Qur’an 2:286)

Feeling low does not mean your Eman (Faith) is weak or that Allah is displeased with you. It simply means you are human. Allah knows you are capable of carrying this, but He also knows you need rest.

2. The Permission to Pause

Let go of the idea that you must be perfect and productive 24/7. When we become overwhelmed, we lose focus.

  • Give yourself permission to rest. * Change your environment. * Take a gentle break from intensive studies if needed.

When I went through this, I realized sitting with my thoughts without a plan wasn't helping. I needed to reignite my motivation. For me, that was listening to the Asma-ul-Husna (The Names of Allah). The more I learned about Him, the more my love grew, and that love eventually pulled me back to the Qur’an.

3. Practical Steps for Healing

Growth comes in small, consistent steps. When you feel empty, start here:

  • Sincere Istighfar: Be honest with yourself. Name your mistakes and ask for forgiveness. If you aren't sure what is wrong, ask Allah for Eslah (self-rectification).

  • Real-Time Dua: Talk to Allah in the moment. If you feel overwhelmed during class, pray right then: “Ya Allah, remove this burden from my heart. Open my heart to Your light.”

  • Guard the Obligations: Focus on your five daily prayers (Fard). Once those are firm, add Sunnah prayers gradually—start with Fajr, then slowly add others over weeks.

  • Morning & Evening Adhkar: These are your shield and your source of peace.

4. Why Does the Heart Feel Heavy?

Sometimes, the darkness we feel is because we haven't honored the Qur’an as it deserves. The Qur’an is not an ordinary book; it is the Speech of Allah. When we treat it casually, its light can fade from our hearts.

Reflect on this: Who were you before the Qur’an entered your life? Remembering your "old self" can awaken gratitude—and gratitude protects your blessings.

5. The Choice is Yours

A lecture can inspire you for an hour, but long-term change requires a decision. You have to choose Allah again and again.

  • Prioritize the Akhirah: We often feel confused because we try to hold the Deen and the Dunya with the same grip. One will always dominate the heart.

  • Trust the Divine Plan: Think of Yusuf (AS). The well looked like darkness, but it was the path to the throne.

When You Are Too Drained to Act

If sickness or sadness leaves you with no energy, remember Him silently. Even without moving your lips, let your heart say:

  • SubhanAllah

  • Alhamdulillah

  • Allahu Akbar

You may not understand the reason behind what you’re facing, but He does. And that is enough.
